THIS YEAR’S LINEUP!!!

1792 Port Finish Bourbon

Hard to locate, this expression of 1792 came to us via a private collector and makes for an outstanding lead off to the 2019 edition of the 12 Days of Bourbon.

Basil Hayden® 10 Year Old

Basil Hayden has long been admired by bourbon drinkers. 2019 saw the first hard-to-get release of a 10 year old version, and we have some here for you to try.

Eagle Rare® Barrel Pick (Beverage Warehouse)

Eagle Rare has long been a delightful bourbon, and until recent times it was still something we could find as a regular one of our truffle offerings. But in the past year or so it has gone the way of so many of the Buffalo Trace distilled products, and has become a unicorn. The version here is a Beverage Warehouse Barrel Pick from 2016.

Wilderness Trail Bourbon (Single Barrel, BIB. 14I12.)

As sponsors of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, one of the nice things is that we often get to learn about distilleries as they are first getting started. Wilderness Trail took the bold step of committing to Bottled-in-Bond releases, and we couldn’t help but admire that. Going one step further, this BIB release is also a single barrel. They’ve been widely well-received and we think this will show you why.

Jefferson’s Bourbon Old Rum Cask Finish Barrel Pick (Beverage Warehouse)

In 2018 we picked up a couple Beverage Warehouse barrel pick varieties of Jefferson’s finished bourbons. This Old Rum Cask finished stuck out to us and we thought we’d share it here.

Peerless Bourbon (1st release)

We’ve been fortunate enough to meet Corky Taylor and his family as they were building their distillery, and have watched with fascination as they’ve grown into an impressive craft distiller. While they are known best for their exceptional rye, we were honored to be able to pick up this bottle of their very first bourbon release. We’ve been anticipating this one for years and are so glad to be able to bring it to you as part of our 12 Days of Bourbon for 2019.

Old Forester® Birthday Bourbon 2016

Every year, the Birthday Bourbon is sought after by collectors and bourbon aficionados as a “have to have” selection. And they’ve made several appearances in our 12 Days collections. We thought it would be nice to keep the streak going this year with the 2016 release.

Van Winkle Family Reserve 12 Year Old Lot B (2017)

No brand in bourbon attracts more attention than the Van Winkle family, and while the Pappy Van Winkle members are the most sought out, we have long felt like the younger expressions tend to suit our palates a bit better. And we know from experience that this 12 year bourbon makes for a fantastic truffle, so we offer it here for your enjoyment.

Col. E.H. Taylor® Four Grain BIB Bourbon

Col. E.H. Taylor is a brand that receives wide respect from people who enjoy drinking fine bourbons. We felt like this Four Grain BIB would be a splendid example of the craft and quality that this brand is known for.

Barterhouse™ Bourbon 2017 release (Originally mis-typed as 2016 release)

The Orphan Barrel project has seen some fine whiskies brought to light and released under a number of whimsical, retro brands. Barterhouse might be the best known of these. This 20 year old bourbon is the second oldest release in this years collection. Although Barterhouse tends to be reasonable to find, not everyone is going to jump to try it due to the price. That makes it an outstanding candidate to appear in this year’s set.

Angel’s Envy Sherry Cask Finish Limited Release

It didn’t take long for Angel’s Envy to become a beloved and respected brand in bourbon. Their focus on cask-finished products puts them in a unique space, and they routinely deliver spectacular whiskies. We were so glad to get our hands on the 2019 Limited Release of the Sherry Cask finished bourbon and we knew right away that we would be excited to feature it here.

Heaven Hill 27 Year Old Small Batch Barrel Proof

The oldest bourbon to ever appear in the 12 Days of Bourbon set is this bottle of Heaven Hill. This is a truly historic bottle, and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. This is a small batch bourbon of 41 barrels, bottled at barrel proof. (The proof is a surprisingly low 94.7, due to the warehouse position actually causing the proof to drop while aging.) This bourbon is all pre-fire juice from before the 1996 disaster that every Kentuckian remembers. Carefully monitored and selected, this is an outstanding example of the quality that comes out of Heaven Hill distillery, and we’re thrilled to include it as the flagship of the 2019 edition of the 12 Days of Bourbon.

CARE AND FEEDING OF YOUR TRUFFLES

Okay…you don’t feed them, but you want to keep them in great shape for Christmas. This is really pretty easy to do.

We recommend storing them below 74°F. A cool spot is best. Do *not* freeze them though. If you have to refrigerate them, the chocolates may bloom (get a hazy white look) — they’ll taste just as good, but won’t be as pretty. Just don’t let them get warm and they’ll be great for your holiday gift giving.

If you have to travel by air with them, TAKE THEM IN YOUR CARRY ON. Truffles that are packed in your luggage have a disturbing tendency to go missing. Plus, the belly of the plane is likely going to be dramatically colder than the cabin which could cause issues with blooming. And honestly, we’ve never really tested what the low pressure of high altitude can do to the truffles. So be safe and keep them with you.

If you did end up refrigerating them, let them stand for a while to come back to room temperature before enjoying them. The flavor will be fuller and the texture silkier.

HOW LIMITED IS THIS EDITION?

The initial allotment is 300 because we know we can get at least 300 truffles out of a bottle. This is the number on the initial pre-order. After that, the recipes will be made and we’ll find out how many we actually get. (This varies by the proof of the bourbon, and whether anything goes horribly wrong like a dropped tray.) Typically we end up with anywhere from a final set count of 325 to 375, although in theory it could go as high as 425. Whatever we have will be for sale at our stores at that point. If we get a really good number, some additional sets may show up online in limited quantities. And anything in store is first come, first served. Even if you miss all those, don’t despair completely…sometimes there are folks who cancel their pickup order and we have a few sets that come available again a few days before Christmas. (Watch Facebook for announcements on those.) Good luck, and thank you all so much for your support of a small, family-owned business!
